Advantages of Aluminum Hitches

Aluminum offers several advantages as a material of choice for hitches, particularly when compared with steel. In some circumstances, the cost-efficiency or heavy-duty capabilities of steel may be a necessity. However, for most towing setups, an aluminum hitch provides more than enough weight capacity with several key advantages.

  1. Lightweight Build
Aluminum hitch ball mounts are typically lighter than steel ones, making them easier to handle and install.
  2. Corrosion Resistance
Aluminum is naturally corrosion-resistant, meaning aluminum ball mounts are less prone to rust and degradation over time, especially in the outdoor or wet conditions of towing a trailer.
  3. Aesthetic Appeal
CURT aluminum ball mounts have a sleek, modern look and feel that is typically preferred over the more industrial look of steel mounts.
  4. Ease of Maintenance
Due to their corrosion resistance, aluminum ball mounts generally require less maintenance than steel ones, saving time and effort in upkeep.
  5. Fuel Efficiency
The lighter weight of aluminum hitch mount can contribute to improved fuel economy when towing, as there is less added weight to the vehicle.
  6. Less Receiver Wear
Because aluminum is softer than steel, aluminum ball mounts may cause less wear and tear on the hitch receiver over time.
  7. Non-Magnetic
Aluminum is non-magnetic, and this can be advantageous to some trailer owners in situations where magnetic interference is a concern.

Aluminum Hitch FAQs

  • Are aluminum hitches safe?
All CURT aluminum hitches are tested according to SAE J684 specifications for safety -- the same testing standards we apply to all of our steel hitches.
  • Are aluminum hitches as strong as steel?
For many of our most popular steel hitches, an aluminum equivalent is available, including our very popular adjustable steel mount #45900 (aluminum equivalent: #45363). While aluminum characteristically does not have as much tensile strength as steel, comparable weight are available in many cases.
  • Do aluminum hitches rust?
Aluminum is a naturally rust-free metal. This means an aluminum hitch holds up to the elements much better than a steel alternative. It is still important to take care of your aluminum hitch and store it in a dry space when not in use to help avoid things like galvanic corrosion.
  • What is the downside of an aluminum hitch?
Compared to its steel counterpart, an aluminum hitch may be more expensive up front, but this cost can translate to long-term savings because of aluminum’s low maintenance requirements. Additionally, for particularly heavy-duty towing situations, steel components may be preferred for their higher weight capacities.
